Ever feel stuck in a leadership limbo? You need to address a performance issue, but you don't want to crush your team member's spirit. Or maybe you have a brilliant idea but struggle to get it heard in a crowded meeting.

As your Leadership Coach at EverAspire Coaching, I hear these challenges all the time. Leadership isn't about barking orders. It's about awakening the possibilities within yourself and your team.  And that starts with mastering the art of assertive communication.

Assertive Doesn't Mean Aggressive

Think of assertiveness as a confident middle ground between passivity and aggression. A passive leader might let issues slide, while an aggressive one might steamroll over concerns. The assertive leader, however, finds their voice while acknowledging the needs and feelings of others.

Here's how to be an assertive leader with high EQ in action:

Focus on "I" Statements: Instead of accusatory "you" statements ("You're always missing deadlines!"), try "I feel frustrated when deadlines are missed because it puts the whole project at risk."  This approach opens the door to a collaborative solution.

Listen Actively: Before diving in with solutions, truly hear your team member's perspective. Ask clarifying questions and show genuine interest in their challenges.

Acknowledge Feelings: Validate their emotions. "I understand this project is complex, and managing multiple aspects can be stressful." This fosters trust and opens communication.

State Your Needs Clearly: Once you've acknowledged their side, be clear about your expectations. "To stay on track, let's set up weekly check-ins to discuss progress."

Offer Support: Show you're there to help them succeed. "Is there anything I can do to provide additional resources or remove roadblocks?"

Remember:

Body Language Matters: Maintain good posture and eye contact—project confidence, not aggression.

Choose the Right Setting: For sensitive conversations, opt for a private space to avoid putting someone on the spot.

By mastering assertive communication, you'll gain the respect of your team while fostering a supportive, productive environment. This paves the way for true leadership – one that empowers and inspires those around you.

Remember, mastering assertive communication is a journey, not a destination. There will be bumps along the way, but with practice and a commitment to empathy, you can become a leader who commands respect while fostering a thriving team environment.
